The Woman Behind the House

Anchor 1

Gayle Donohue

I’m Gayle Donohue and this is the story of a Victorian home, the rooms that shape it, and the life within the walls.

I have always believed that a home is more than the walls that surround us.

A home is where memories collect. It is where ordinary moments become meaningful. It is where the objects we choose, the colors we live with, and the spaces we create begin to tell the story of who we are.

For more than two decades, I have been caring for and transforming a Victorian house in upstate New York—a home filled with history, character, and endless possibilities. What began as a love of old houses and beautiful rooms became something much deeper: a way of understanding how our surroundings shape our lives.

Each room has taught me something.

The guest room taught me about welcome.
The dining room taught me about gathering.
The porch taught me about slowing down and noticing the world outside.

Through paint, furniture, collections, and the thoughtful reuse of what I already had, I discovered that creating a beautiful home does not require perfection or endless spending. It requires curiosity, creativity, patience, and a willingness to see possibility where others might see what has been overlooked.

Before becoming a storyteller of homes, I spent many years working in hospitality, leadership, and service. I learned that spaces matter because people matter. A well-designed room is not just visually pleasing—it creates an experience. It invites people to stay, connect, celebrate, and feel at home.

That belief guides everything I do.

This website is a collection of stories from my Victorian home: the rooms I have transformed, the objects that carry memories, the lessons learned along the way, and the discoveries that come from paying attention to the places we call home.

I believe decorating is not about chasing perfection.

It is about creating a home that reflects a life well lived.

A home that remembers where it came from.

A home that continues to become.

Welcome inside.

The Stories We Create at Home

Every home has a story.  The rooms we hold memories, traditions, collections, and the pieces of ourselves we choose to surround ourselves with.

I believe decorating is not about following trends or creating perfect space.  It is about discovering what matters to you and creating a home that feels authentic, welcoming, and uniquely yours.

Let’s explore the stories your home has already begun to tell.
